Remarks & Notes
I used to spend quite a bit of time around the Wisconsin Rapids area during the late 70's-80's. The normal pattern was get all the GB&W that was possible and then fill in the dead time with the other railroads in the area. Late on a mid-Summer evening I had headed north to Junction City in hopes of getting Milw. train 246 on its way from Wausau to the Rapids. The long days of summer was the only time that you normally could shoot 246 as it was a late evening dept. from Wausau. On this day I had checked in with a switch crew at the Milw. depot in the Rapids and they assured me 246 was out of Wausau headed our way. After a quick run up highway 34 from the Rapids we arrived at Junction City and set up for 246. A horn to the north confirmed he was headed our way. Moments later a horn to the east confirmed that a westbound Soo train was also nearing Junction City. The shot I had set up for the Milw. train was not what I needed for a Soo shot and I had no idea which train was going to get the light. I quickly retreated to my car which was parked in a bars parking lot near the diamond just in time to hear the Conductor on 246 ask the head end "why we stopping here?" The head end replied that they had stopped for a red one at the interlocking. The Conductor answered with a "You gotta be kiddin me".Apparently very few times did trains of either line delay one another in this location. I scrambled west and north and set up for this Soo shot as 943 screamed through town like a bat out of hell with 788,6607,762,2412 and 105 cars. Moments after he cleared I was able to also get my shot of Milw. train 246. A great few minutes in Junction City!
