A beautiful "estacion"
Built in 1929, the Portbou station was sized as a major international border facility. With the advent of the European Union, passengers are not ID or customs checked any more but the station keeps an important role because it is a technical border for trains, between the broad gauge in Spain and standard gauge in France. However when the new Perpignan Figueras standard gauge line opens in a few months, it will probably become much oversized for the traffic using the old coast line. Both high speed passenger trains and freight trains will use the new line.
