JR Hokkaido Super Oozora limited express train no. 7 running along the Pacific coast near Ombetsu at twilight on February 2, 2007. The rugged Hidaka Mountains, the backbone of southern Hokkaido, loom on the horizon before finally plunging into the sea at wind-swept Cape Erimo at far upper left. At the time, there were six daily Super Oozora services in each direction, all provided by the 283 series DMUs. The equipment features 6-degree tilting mechanisms and makes the 216.5 mile run between Sapporo and Kushiro in under four hours, which includes six intermediate stops. The service competes favorably with domestic flights, and a seventh daily roundtrip has since been added.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
