| A view from within the 1911 ex NH interlocking tower U416 featuring the original 1930s era pneumatic US&S interlocking machine that controlled the signals and derails for the bridge as well as the Canal Jct. switch. The CTC board can be seen above the windows with odd hump in the track schematic indicating where a four track passenger yard once stood in front of the depot back in the glory days of the New Haven. At the time of this photo these original controls were still functioning albeit with only three levers remaining in service. A Mass Coastal dispatcher controls train movements from this second floor perch in this classic 98 year old structure. As you read this however, all of that is now history as the interlocking was replaced with solid-state microprocessor controls about two months after this photo was taken. At least the tower will survive and remain manned part time for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Mass Coastal employee Andrew Eldridge for the gracious tour. |
