| Tehachapi Summer. From miles away I hear it coming, nearer ever so nearer. Sound escalating than softening, running through heat rising. It runs by me with whining turbochargers and barking exhaust. Then follows the smells: sweet aromatic exhaust, stale compressed air and occasional hot brake shoe from a heavy application on the last downgrade. How these guys keep all of the wheels on the track with the abundant curvature and varying terrain is explained in engineering text but is not easily understood.
