Remarks & Notes |
Down the Dragons Throat All the noise from this eastbound train is directed out of the tunnel portal and shakes your body like the grand finally of a fireworks show on the 4th of July. Headlights from the locomotive light up the tunnel walls and ceiling for a rare look inside a tunnel only rails know well. Looking inside you can clearly see where the tunnel was cut for double-stack clearance, and where the catenary lines were mounted back during the days of electrification, but I think the coolest part is where the grade clearly drops off for the steep ride down to Skykomish. Previously I always figured the grade fell off right at the entrance, but I see now it happens a few hundred feet in. Taken far away with a very long lens. |
