Unbelievable ... until you see it with your own eyes! Could you imagine that a standard gauge mainline be built in such a landscape? After I've seen it I am still amazed. The train is going away from the photographer, pushing its cars to gain elevation until it reaches a distant switch before resuming its journey uphill engines first. The upper level can be seen right above the engines. This is on Peru's standard gauge 369 miles long Ferrocaril Central, definitely the toughest and most spectacular railway in the world and in addition one of the highest. In 108 miles it climbs from sea level at the Port of El Callao to 4,783 m / 15,694 ft at the Galera summit tunnel.
That was also a tough one to edit. Took me a lot of time to end up with an acceptable result. And I still think that one can do better... |
