Over the winter of 1994-1995, the railroad began shopping for additional motive power and cars. Following two trips to Canada, two former VIA RAIL CANADA (ex-CN) Model FP-9 diesel-electric locomotives No. 6505 and No. 6516 were purchased for service on the Crawford Notch Line. Both units were built in 1954 and 1957 respectively by General Motors of Canada in London, Ontario and were 'retired' by CN in 1978 and transferred to VIA. The two units were received by way of Whitefield, NH and arrived in North Conway on August 14, 1995. CSRR No. 6516 was placed in service on September 16, 1995 on the Crawford Notch train. CSRR No. 6505 entered service a year later.
