Volcano smoke competing with locomotive smokes!
There are very few pictures on RPN showing a train with a live volcano displaying volcanic activity. I only found another one, from Gianfranco Berto in Italy: #211675. Picture 281319 by Phil Cotteril also shows the same Etna volcano but the volcanic activity is hidden behind summit clouds.
Now for pictures showing volcano smoke AND locomotive smoke, I am happy to introduce the category on RPN - A highly exclusive club!
Volcán Ollagüe - also known as Oyahué - is a massive andesite stratovolcano in the Andes on the border between Bolivia and Chile - elevation 5,868m / 19,252ft. A persistent steam plume emanates from a fumarole on the south side of the summit dome. On the northwest side of the mountain a disused switchback road whose highest point reaches over 5,650m is said to be the highest road in the world.
When we were chasing the train and I first noticed the white cloud on top of the mountain, I thought that it was some sand dust blown away by the wind. At the time I had no idea that it was real volcano activity. |
