When the U. S. Navy arranged for me to make a brief visit to Sasebo, Japan, not only was I able to buy my first Nikon camera at the Navy Exchange, but I was surprised to find the JNR to be 100 percent steam in the area. These graceful little class C57 pacific's headed the frequent passenger service between Sasebo and Nagasaki. Here the C57175 switches in the yard at Haiki, the junction between the branch to Sasebo and the mainline to Nagasaki. While JNR was narrow gauge and steam powered here, in Tokyo they were already laying track for the new high speed "bullet" trains.
