Remarks: We're on the scene of the Canadian Pacific derailment in north suburban Chicago wherein 18 cars from two freight trains derailed around 3:00 this afternoon. Here we see the cars that have fallen from the rail bridge and onto Shermer Road. From what I have read and heard, no one was seriously injured and nothing hazardous was spilled in the derailment.

The train did, though, come within a few feet of several Propane tanks at a strip mall, which were emptied as a precaution.

Looks like 99% off the tracks to me.

A local liquor store owner was only concerned that his customers couldn't get through. This photo is much better than the ones in the local paper, thanks Chris.

Interestingly, a CNW train derailed here in the 70's when the bridge at this exact same overpass collapsed underneath it.

With this rough economy, the CP now has to rebuild both tracks and the overpass to continue operations. With Amtrak using this same line multiple times a day going from Milwaukee to Chicago along with the Empire Builder, CP will have some hard times until this location returns to normal. Glad to hear nobody was seriously injured in this accident.

Amtrak does not use this line. This is a freight-only track the loops around O'Hare airport and goes to CP's Bensenville Yard and UP's Proviso Yard/Global II. CP can use its own track to bypass this derailment by way of Pacific Junction further south. The derailment was cleaned up and the tracks reopened yesterday, and since UP has only a few freights using this line, they just held them until the line reopened.

Forgive me if I missed it. But what was the cause of the derailment?
