Remarks: Looking back through the RP Archives from a few days ago, we see photo 295709 announcing the modern day Alphabet Route here in southwestern Pennsylvania. In this scene we see WLE 2662 holding the main at the East End of Bruceton as AVR 767-777 thread their way through Bruceton Siding and the rebuilt connection to regional AVR after a overnight trip from Brewster as the new Alphabet Route launches its first run-through train from the West, with 50+ cars of mixed freight. Also pictured is WE 6314 which was switched out of the AVR consist here at Bruceton which was added at Brewster for extra horsepower to assit in making the grades on the W&LE East of Rook.

What are those Dash 8 looking locos on the right? I'm guessing foreign power on their way back to GE for rebuilds/updates?

Posted by Pete Schierloh on September 3, 2009

Actually they look like AVVR units. Secondhand Modern GE's?

Posted by Bob Topping on September 3, 2009

The AVR (Allegheny Valley RR) units look to be AC4400CW's? Steerable trucks. Last I knew they had 2 GP11's and 2 ex-KCS SD4M-2's? When did these arrive? And were they bought new or second-hand?

Since when did GE start building locos with a set of blanked out number boards on the nose as well as number boards above the windshields? Also, why is the radiator section on the lead unit black and the one on the scond unit is red?

Photoshopped AVR GE locomotives!

Posted by Chase Zickefoose on September 3, 2009

Those aren't AVR locos. It looks like AVVR on the front, but a little research revealed that there is a AWR (Australian Western Railroad) that is owned by G&W. I wasn't able to find any info on these locos in my quick search, but my guess is that they are either on their way back to GE from Australia for work/repair, or vice versa. The plows look dirty and considering the body design is Dash 8/9 era, I wouldn't assume these to be new locos. (Plus all of the other Aussie operations are purchasing the newer models like the U.S. roads - they may have emissions restrictions over there too!)

Isn't there a movie being filmed on the WLE? Surely they're for that.

Very mysterious engines, I think hi-railer did this on purpose to keep us guessing.

When I saw the Dash 8 in this picture as a scale drawing, I thought it was a Santa Fe red bonnet. I sure was fooled.

Darrell just about got it right - there's a Denzel Washington film called Unstoppable being filmed on the WNY&P. These locos, 767 and 777, have been painted for the movie. It's interesting that they've already "dirtied" them up to look real. From other photos I've seen, they appear to be AC4400CW's. Not sure who they belong to though - I'm guessing GE demos?

There are actually 6 locos painted up as AWVR "Allegheny and West Virginia" locos for the movie. I got pics of them all, but unfortunately they weren't RPnet quality.

The AC4400s are Canadian Pacific 9700 series units. I moved three of them a month or so ago onto an outbound train; the roundhouse foreman told me that they were the locomotives the movie studio had selected for the film. I know they took hundreds and hundreds of them from every angle.

Also note the blanked low numberboards and new high numberboards!
