Remarks & Notes
Doubleheading from Alamosa to Antonito. At Antonito both engines will take coal and water, and the helper will be cut into the train for the climb to Cumbres. It will be long after dark and probably close to 16 hours since going on duty by the time the crews tie up for the night at Chama. Only a few months later Yuri Alekseyevich Gargarin flew into space and circled the earth in the Vostok spaceship. The DRGW narrow gauge was an amazing time warp, even in the early 1960's....and the preserved D&S and C&TS portions still are.

Either a freight train being helped over a steep grade or a long passenger or freight train requiring more engines. This album is for the Helpers and the double heading trains of the old days both steam and diesel.
Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

A compilation of DRGW's La Veta Pass route to the San Luis Valley now operated by the SLRG. With Rio Grande Scenic passenger operations coming to a close in 2019, the Alamosa sub is once again freight-only, as reflected here.

Rio Grande Narrow Gauge in the 60's

The DRGW narrow gauge was the last major steam operation in the U.S. The climb over 10,000 foot Cumbres pass was spectacular, with two engines handling 70 car trains. Hopefully these images convey some of the drama of mountain steam railroading.
