| Engineer Sam Lanter and volunteer brakeman Lloyd Barker (joined by the photographer--who was firing this day) attend to some fallen trees in the "gorge" between Phillips and Benham, VA. This was the Southern's original main line from Bristol into the soutwestern Virginia coalfields---first opened for traffic about 1886 (abandoned today, of course). |
