I believe the C&S steam operation on the isolated Climax branch may have been the last regular use of standard gauge steam on a Class I in the U.S. As I remember the story, the C&S continued to use steam because there was some doubt about how well diesels would perform at the high altitude (Climax is 11,360 feet). Unfortunately the diesels did just fine when they got around to trying them a few months later. |
