Remarks & Notes
The Rev. Eric Treacy was a very famous railway photographer in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Although he was basically a wedgie man, his photos were nevertheless superb. Much of his work is published and still available. Eventually he became Bishop of Wakefield. After retiring, he still photographed trains and was on Appleby Station to see a main line steam special on the day he died in May 1978. On the 30th September that year, three special trains were run in his memory over the Settle to Carlisle line. Here we see one of the trains titled, “The Lord Bishop” with 4472 Flying Scotsman at the head leaving Hellifield Station for Carlisle. This is a later shot of the train shown on 273503. Note the spectators all over the tracks, that would never happen now. The safety guys wouldn't let people near it without being kept behind huge barriers/fences hundreds of yards away! All the fun has gone....
