Remarks & Notes
In 1947 the "Train of the Goddesses" (one of the second pair of Twin Zephyrs) hit a bulldozer (which had fallen off a freight train on the middle track) at about 73 mph and then hit this station shearing off the front (track side). Three people were killed and 30 injured in this accident. In November 1947 the repaired train set was reassigned to Nebraska Zephyr service between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska along with the "Train of the Gods". The front side of the station was rebuilt in a very different grander style. The station originally looked much like the CB&Q stations at Sandwich and Plano, Illinois but with no outdoor waiting area at each end. The Sandwich station is pictured at: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=786745 The engineer was killed but the lead engine (E5A 9914A) was rebuilt.

A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
