God, how I miss this Locomotive, Someone needs to slap the NS and have them put this back on the road where it belongs

very nice photo, and congrats on POTW!

Thank You BNSF SAMMY, and everyone else for the many fine compliments !!!! Seems like each year at this time of year I relive the memory and loss of this magnificent moment in time. I'm not a native Roanoker, nor do I spend much time visiting 611 & 1218 down at VMT. but I feel that their absence on the rails is a tragic loss to "living" history. In that respect, it's difficult to accept the realities of this real world that we live in.

This is such a classic shot! I have a few photos of this engine but none come close to this. Mike

Micheal - Coming from one of the best, I'll consider that a real compliment. Thank You !!! As a side note here, I remembered this 'S' curve from an earlier trip I had riden courtesy of the crew. Specifically, I wanted to know where the strong angles were climbing the grade, and there's no better place to do that than from the engine cab. This location just grabbed me during that ride. I recall 'photo day' vividly which was blessed by a cool fall morning under nearly cloudless skies. I could already smell the shot in the making. I choose to walk down the tracks well in advance. I was well out of site of everyone else but not quite to the curve when I noticed another guy gaining on me at a distance. Just as I arrived at this spot the other guy drew even. After several minutes it was "Game Time". The sound of the 'J' pounding upgrade could be heard in a distance. In hindsight, I wish I was also shooting video. The moment was living history and one which I will not forget as long as I live. The other guy, by the way, was none other than Nils Huxtable, also one of the best. Nils subsequently printed a similar shot on one of his well known Steamscenes Calendar covers.

It dosent get much better than that photo! 611 with a Powhattan Arrow'ish trainset!

Thanks Bart !!! - I could attempt to edit out the trailing diesel to make it appear even more so. The crew mentioned that it was idling all the way up the grade as it was so we really don't need it trailing behind the tenders anyways.

Christianburg Mountain grade must be the NS version of CSX's 17 mile grade on the westend
