Remarks: Milwaukee 261 rises high in the air as the restoration crew removes the driving wheels for overhaul. After the engine was placed back on its lead and trailing trucks it became the world's largest 4-0-4!

Remarks: C&NW F7A No. 400 leads the North Western's business train accelerating south at Rosemount, Minnesota on the ex-Rock Island on Oct. 15, 1986. It's just after sunrise and the sun is peaking out as a band of clouds retreats north.

Remarks: It doesn't look like it, but this is CP's Holiday train. It was towed backwards from a wye at Mona, near Lyle, Minn., to Mason City since there is not a wye there and the train had to head east out of Mason City. ICE 6444 and 6436 are coupled to the observation car you can't see heading through a drift south of Plymouth, Iowa.

Remarks: A light dusting of snow offers the rare opportunity to see SP 4449 in a wintery scene as it leaves Minneapolis for Winona and La Crescent, Minn. Temperature was in the 20s - it's going to be a long winter!

Remarks: SP 4449 is inside the 261 shop in Minneapolis on July 11. In the background are the "running Indian" logos used on the 261's passenger cars - but 261 is currently out of service, shoved to the far end of the shop looking forlorn.

Remarks: SP 4449 is cruising along at 60 mph east of Verndale, Minn., on BNSF's ex-NP Staples Sub en route to Minneapolis. The engine had traveled this route once previously en route from Fargo to Minneapolis pulling the American Freedom Train in September 1975.

Remarks: In honor of 4449 returning to Minnesota this summer, here's one of my favorite shots of the 4-8-4. During the American Freedom Train's visit to the state in 1975, the train was displayed in Minneapolis' Minnehaha Park on the Milwaukee Road. At the end of the display the train was to be handed off to the BN in St. Paul, and head west toward Willmar. The move was to begin at night, but was delayed just enough to allow for this shot of the train crossing the famous Stone Arch Bridge at sunrise, with the sun barely burning through the morning fog. Today the bridge is a walking and biking path, but the 4449 still runs and will be stored between trips in Minneapolis just a few blocks from the bridge.

Remarks: I can remember looking at photos in books where J. Parker Lamb would shoot pan shots of MKT and GM&O FAs. Well, here's my salute to Mr. Lamb as I pan UP/Katy 1988 at 50 mph on a deadhead OLS special between Necedah and Wyeville, Wis. Speed limits here have been raised to 50 mph. This was shot at 1/30 second.

Remarks: CN's local from White Pine to North Bessemer, Mich., makes its way west crossing Presque Isle Creek. Only eight ex-Wisconsin Central GP40s survive at this writing on CN's roster, so getting two of them on this job is quite a catch.

Remarks: BN Train 125, with an A-B pair of F9s, heads north for Superior, Wis., leaving Northtown at Interstate. This was the only time I caught an A-B pair of Fs on a BN train.

Remarks: With SP 4449 coming back to the Midwest this summer for the first time since 1975, I thought folks would enjoy this shot of her. The locomotive is heading south from Oakland to LA at Sargent, California on May 3, 1989. It was heading to the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station.
