Remarks: A rare winter run to the sand and gravel pit at Corson occured on Feb 9, 2010, as the E&E moved some cars around that were shopped for repairs durring the down time afforded by the winter slowdown to the construction season. E&E utilizes trackage rights over the BNSF out of Sioux Falls to link their operations at Corson.

Remarks: BNSF used its Sioux Falls based snow dozer to open up the heavily drifted Madison Sub. Unfortunately by the time I caught up with them they were through the heavy stuff...arghhh. This dozer was built by the Great Northern in 1966.

Remarks: This is what BNSFwas up against for twenty miles of its Ravenna Sub between MP33 and MP55. Drifts across both tracks resulting in a berm between the two mains that was pushed by this Jordan Spreader onto the south track and blown clear with a rotary plow.

Remarks: To remove the berm of snow between the double mains along the eastern end of the Ravenna Sub, BNSF utilized this Jordan ditcher to push the berm onto the other track where the rotary plow blew it off the right of way. Here the rotary is cleaning up after the Jordan ditcher has done its job.

Remarks: D&I is providing storage for a unit train set of coal hoppers on its new passing siding at Chatsworth. During the Christmas 2009 snowstorm that dumped up to 20 inches these cars provided a wind break allowing for a long drift over the main line. The first train through was this BNSF loaded shuttle train with a former SP SD39 leading the way.

Remarks: The loading of BNSF shuttle grain trains at Beresford, SD, on the D&I was once common but now happens just a few times a year. Here one is just arriving North Sioux City where it will be interchanged back to the BNSF. One of D&Is two former SP SD39s has been busting through drifts all day on its southward run.

Remarks: This chase of an IC&E Russell Plow on the Jackson Sub was every bit as good as the symbol assigned to it - WOW-29, short for Work train OWatonna Sub. This train began on the Owatonna sub out of Mason City and ended up on the Jackson Sub. Propulsion for IC&E plow 100251 is being provided by a pair of Blue & Yellow SD40s.

Remarks: To facilitate a meet at Hawarden, this empty stone train has pulled up the former C&NW branch to Beresford, SD, to clear of the main line so that the ethanol local can head for Sioux City. The train of 25 empty mill gons is powered by D&I's pair of former Southern Pacific SD39s.
