Remarks: Warm sun on the distant trees contrasts with the frosty scene still lurking in the shadows below. An overnight temperature of zero combined with the humid air of the unfrozen river created inch-thick hoar frost on the foliage along the riverbank. Shortly after the grimy Amtrak engine and three Superliners en route for Chicago passed, the sun quickly made history of this beautiful winter scene.

Remarks: A railfan in a white Chevy pulls in to New Richmand Park just in time to get a front row seat for E949 heading west with a cut of empties. A frozen riverbank provided me a vantage point that would normally result in standing in about 10 feet of water, and fortunately I had a large branch to hang on to just in case the ice cracked.

Remarks: "It's all downhill from here!" After its long journey across the Great Plains and two mountain ranges, California Zephyr #5 is on the final leg of its trip en route to the San Francisco Bay area. Here we see 186 & 162 leading their train as it effortlessly glides around the big curve at Troy on the west slope of Donner Pass.

Remarks: A challenging hike high into the hills gave me a bird's eye view of the big curve at Troy. A short time later, 184 and its brother came along, belching out exhaust as they worked hard to pull the Chicago-bound Zephyr up the west slope of Donner Pass. The bright sun that day relfected off the white rocks and illuminated the shadowed side of the Superliners. Another beautiful summer afternoon on Donner Pass!
