Remarks: It's a rarity to see a BNSF coal train on UP rails through the mountains. This one is passing by the Colorado River along the Dotsero Cutoff on the way to Denver.

Remarks: The Rio Grande heritage unit was a surprise leader of the eastbound California Zephyr due to a malfunctioning Amtrak engine. UP 1989 led the train all the way to Chicago.

Remarks: It has been 11 years since the last revenue train passed through on the date of this photo, allowing this single spruce to gain a foothold and grow to a height of 2 feet. If this were the American southeast, nature would have a much stronger hold on reclaiming this railroad landscape... but the Colorado winters are harsh and the air is very dry, making this line appear to be in good shape.

Remarks: There certainly isn't much snow left in these parts of Colorado, but I wouldn't rule out winter just yet. This westbound manifest looks good alongside an unfrozen Colorado River as it heads for Utah...

Remarks: In a photo taken in 2007, an empty coal train passes by the remnants of a small derailment on the S-curved Crater Loops. Sources tell me that this was caused by a "stringlining" of the train where the cars were simply yanked off the tracks due various pushing/pulling forces of the locomotives.

Remarks: The westbound California Zephyr zips downgrade with its usual 8 car consist, along with a few extra in the form of Grand Luxe passenger cars. It was my understanding that these cars were tacked on the Amtrak train to be sent for storage somewhere out west. Wasn't long afterwards that the Grande Luxe stopped running trains altogether...

Remarks: The Rio Grande and CNW heritage units pull a Union Pacific business special back to Denver, about 130 miles away at this point. Never had the CNW unit been on the Moffat Road before.

Remarks: As much history as there has been at the Tennessee Pass tunnel, there isn't a whole lot left to see nowadays. It has been over 11 years since Union Pacific shut the line down (but not abandoned). Vandalism has been rampant along the line as seen by the missing signals at this location.

Remarks: It may look like this lead engine on a loaded coal train is speeding by, but in reality he's going around 30 mph in front of this interesting and attractive railroad cut.

Remarks: At about two hours late at this location, the westbound California Zephyr won't make much time before Glenwood Springs as it negotiates the confines of Glenwood Canyon. Three private cars make up the rear of the train.

Remarks: Hulcher crews are busy cleaning up the aftermath of a derailment involving both UP and BNSF. Reports have a westbound BNSF rear ending a UP empty coal train between the Yarmony west switch and State Bridge, just outside of Bond. Special thanks to TME for the heads-up.

Remarks: Amtrak's WB California Zephyr climbs past Clay siding as a UP loaded coal train restarts its journey downhill to Denver at Rocky siding. Both trains are roughly 1.5 to 2 miles apart at this point.
