Remarks: Amtrak #303 hits the Illinois & Midland diamond at Ridgely. Given recent developments, this will probably be the last winter for Ridgely Tower. Track crews are planning to cut in the first of the new switches on the I&M mainline on January 5th.

Remarks: CN's empty Cedar Rapids coal train crosses the mostly frozen waters of Lake Springfield on its southbound trip to the Crown III mine at Farmersville. Thousands of ice crystals on the surface of the lake reflect sunlight like large diamonds.

Remarks: NS #293 limps west across the frozen tundra of Central Illinois behind 2 ex-Conrail units. The trailing unit wasn't loading properly, so #293 had to grab D2M's power at Chapin in order to make the hill at Griggsville.

Remarks: All appears normal at Ridgely as Amtrak #303 makes its regular sojourn south thru Springfield. Out of sight, however, a Union Pacific track gang is working on the new switches and trackwork that will eventually put the historic tower out of business.
