Remarks: With the lower fall sun angle and the fall colors at peak a couple of SD40-2s rumble through East Oakland. It's been increasingly difficult to find these old workhorses out on the mainlines and it's always a refreshing change of pace to watch (and hear) these EMD's over the seemingly endless consists of GE's that rule the rails today.

Remarks: The shadows were getting longer and patience was wearing thin but fortunately I waited it out with fellow railfan Robert Ball to capture a westbound in sweet evening light. What a beautiful summer evening to be trackside!

Remarks: Amtrak 23 has been cut away from the train as well as some of the passenger cars. The Amtrak unit will take the cars cut away to the Amtrak Station in Saint Paul. SP 4449 just entered the trackage that runs to the Harrison Street maintenance facility which is also happens to be the home storage facility for the Milwaukee Road 261.

Remarks: The Amtrak diesel has been cut away and a few of the passenger cars have been removed. A bit later after this shot was taken the cars cut off from the train were moved to the Midway Amtrak depot. Here the SP 4449 is about to be put away into temporary storage for a week before continuing its journey to Michigan.

Remarks: Hustling its way toward Minneapolis the SP 4449 takes a string of passenger cars east under ominous looking skies that plagued the area most of the afternoon.

Remarks: What a treat! I was fortunate to catch some DME power out on the road in some of few remaining moments of daylight on a beautiful summer evening. Personal friend and fellow railfan Christopher Muller was also at work shooting photos and video of this train.

Remarks: Running 44 minutes late Amtrak's Empire Builder runs through Newport at track speed. I find it thrilling to be standing next to a train rolling this fast past you!
