Remarks: 2 Stack trains are better than one, especially on Donner! As the sun sets to the west, UP 7777 works in DPU service, pushing its train past an east bound train which has taken the hole at Emigrant Gap, California. In the spur to the right, one will find the "Snow Dozer", a modified ballast regulator that is used to help clear snow from the tracks near the Gap.

Remarks: Trains and Water Flumes The UP 5107 leads the westbound AAMWS (Autos - Armourdale, KS to Warm Springs, CA) through the Truckee River Canyon on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain crossing known as Donner Pass. On the opposite side of the river, the old elevated Sierra Pacific Power Company water flume (which once diverted water from the Truckee River and into an old on river power plant) can be seen. The diversion structure was originally constructed in 1899 of wood and rock. It was built to provide water for the Farad Hydro-Electric Plant. The flume measures 10 feet high and 10 feet wide, and could divert somewhere between 325 to 400 cubic feet of water per second out of the river and towards the hydro-electric power plant. Roughly corresponding to a 50-year flood event, January of 1997 brought an exorbitant amount of water into the Truckee River. The river crested with a peak flow of approximately 15,000 cubic feet of water per second. This flooding washed out parts of the flume leaving it unproductive. Thus, its remains are now just one of many Comstock Era ruins that dot the landscape of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Remarks: Crossing the Fill... A west bound BNSF manifest train, lead by the 7640, crosses the fill at Chamberlain Lake near Lyle, Washington. The weather in the Gorge makes for some interesting skies as the fisherman fish for nautical gold in the fertile waters of the Columbia River.

Remarks: Washington Weather... A southbound Amtrak Cascades train speeds past Hawkins Road near Winlock, Washington on its way to Vancouver, Washington in an effort to ferry commuters across the state. The clouds at this location look ominous, but the light on the train is just right. It’s just another day in the beautiful Pacific North West!

Remarks: Ghosts of the Milwaukee Road... Still standing twenty three years after the demise of the Milwaukee Road, the viaduct abutments and supports at Lind, Washington are a stark reminder of the ever-changing face of American railroading. Once a majestic bridge that allowed the Milwaukee to fly over its competitor the Burlington Northern, the ruins are now just one of many relics that dot the landscape and tell the story of the famed Milwaukee Road.

Remarks: The Light at the End of the Tunnel! BNSF 4346 heads into tunnel 1.5 on the BNSF Fallbridge Subdivision. This tunnel was completed in 1977 as part of the line relocation project needed in order to construct the dams along the Columbia River. The old Right of Way that skirted the river was flooded with the construction of the dams.

Remarks: Bank Right! Exiting the Rock Bore Tunnel at Drano Lake, BNSF 4059 leads a westbound grain train towards the Seattle/Tacoma area. After arriving, the load will be transferred onto a ship for global distribution. The elevation around the curve in this location really makes for some interesting photography.

Remarks: Davis Depot. The depot at Davis California was originally built between 1913 and 1914, by the Southern Pacific Railroad. At almost one century old, this Spanish style depot is still in use by Amtrak and currently owned by the Union Pacific. Due to Davis, California being home to a large University (University of California at Davis), many people's preferred method of transportation is bicycle. In this photo, pedestrian bicycles are seen resting under the station lights. In a few short hours, their commuting owners will be arriving by train and pedaling their way toward the University.

Remarks: Hot August Night! A westbound train passes through the double reverse curve at Flaycasters Flat on the Union Pacific's Roseville Subdivision and illuminates the area surrounding the right of way as it approaches Truckee, California. Lights from Truckee illuminate the sky in front of the Sierra Mountains, and lights from Sacramento, California provide the back lighting for the ridgeline in the distance.

Remarks: Flangers in the snow. UP 600 leads the flanger set through the curves at Yuba Pass in the middle of a typical Donner snow storm. The crew is west bound, headed down to Colfax where they will then turn around and make another trip over the mountain, in an effort to keep the Roseville Subdivision open in the winter.

Remarks: A different view at Emigrant Gap. UP 8151 an SD9043MAC leads the heavy Roper to Roseville Manifest train down the Donner grade as it approaches Switch #9. The sky is a pinkish purple as evening sunlight reflects off of smoke from a fire in Yosemite, Ca. To the left, one can see the Lake Spaulding Dam and Reservoir.

Remarks: Gone but not Forgotten! Dust can bee seen filling the air, as an open door lets the morning light beam into the old snow shed that was once part of the original mainline built through Donner Pass by the Central Pacific Railroad.
