Remarks: Deep in the Cascade mountains on BNSF's Scenic sub, 4 BNSF GEs are putting out lots of smoke as they lift another trainload of import containers up the 2.2% grade. The locomotives will soon have to contend with the tight confines of the Cascade tunnel.

Remarks: A working roster shot of one of the new ES44C4s. the cylinders in the middle of the truck is what GE calls "Dynamic Weight Management." The center axle doesn't have a traction motor. These cylinders will engage below 15 mph to lift the center axle as much as an inch and a half to concentrate more weght on the other two axles. The locomotives seem to handle just fine on the 2.2% grade.

Remarks: Two of BNSF's new ES44C4 locos along with GECX test car #90 head up a 6000 plus ton stack train about to ascend Stevens Pass. The locos onl have 4 traction motors as the center axle on each truck is unpowered. They are supposed to equal the performance of an ES44DC. There are two more of these locos along with an isolated ES44DC in DPU mode on the rear. These locos seemed to handle the train fine up the 2.2%

Remarks: My version of todays 226 train (see photo 272304 for Bob Pickering's version) . Thanks to Bob Pickering's great photos, I was able to find this spot near St Augustine. I was hoping to find some new power but I'll settle for this ex UP SD40-2 up front.

Remarks: I was the engineer on this train. Delta yard couldn't take us in right away so I decided to spot my train on the bridge and explore a bike trail that had recently opened that dead ends at our railroad tracks. The CN units have great seats in their locomot

Remarks: After record flooding in parts of Western Washington, it's nice to see sunshine again. The Scenic sub is the only subdivision that has remained open during the bad weather.

Remarks: Two DPUs have gone into dynamic brake mode to help slow the momentum of this UP autorack train while descending the Blue Mountains at Kamela, OR. The long telephoto accentuates the mountain grade at this location.

Remarks: An Interbay, WA (Seattle) grain train in a 2X2 lashup climbs Providence hill. The Dash 9 fleet is looking a little ragged these days as witnessed by the primer paint on the second unit.

Remarks: A UP container train is led by an ex CNW Dash 9 while traversing the Pritchard Creek Horseshoe Curve. The third unit is a standard cab Dash 8 that is becoming rare on the UP. There are quite a few stored in the yard at Hinkle, OR.

Remarks: A nice mix of pre merger locos await their next tour of duty at BN's now defunct Hoyt St. roundhouse. The recession of 1980 would cause the ex NP RS11 to be stored for good. Ex NP F9 820 and ex GN F7 620 would last a little over a year more before they too would be retired from the active roster.

Remarks: After nearly 14 miles of 10mph running, BNSF engineer Rick Kriewald finally gets to notch out his two horses while running to the Renton Boeing plant. This was the second to the last time that the fuselages will run on this line. Progess? I don't think so.

Remarks: For the second to the last time ever, the Renton Turn brings some 737 fuselages through Woodinville on it's way to the Renton Boeing plant. These will be routed through Seattle and Tukwila starting on February 27th. Interstate 405 expansion doomed the tracks between Bellevue and Renton.
