Remarks: Two Southern Pacific units pose next to each other at Brightside Yard, home of the Niles Canyon Railway and GGRM. This was a night shoot put on by Vic Neves, producer of the popular railroad photography slideshow Winterail. While several photographers were on the other side of the steam locomotive ready for the flashbulbs, I decided to step aside and move to the other side of the steam locomotive and try something else.
Remarks: the remains of three Milwaukee Road SD7's, including 500, visible in foreground, lie scattered at the Union Pacific interchange with the Dry Valley Railroad northeast of Soda Springs Idaho. The Dry Valley was a short-lived, 12-mile industrial line which hauled phosphate ore to the UP; one weekend, the crew parked the train without tying handbrakes down. . .and were greeted with this result the following Monday. Former Alaska Railroad FP7's were subsequently leased to replace the SDs.
Remarks: The conductor of local P20 waits outside the Durham Yard Office for the light engines to come off the storage track after dropping their train as they put the locos away on another track.
Remarks: Just after dark, an UP SD70ACe lights up the rocks along the Feather River deep in the canyon. This stack train is working eastbound headed for the windy city from Lathrop, CA.
