Riding through the Karoo in the early morning sun, on the right is the N1 highway linking Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Smoking is not allowed on trains but it seems some passengers dont care about that rule, up front is the daily CPT - JHB Economy train about to pass us.

We have just started our journey through Tulbaghkloof from the east side on board the JHB - CPT Tourist train, in the distance on the right is the R46 betwen Tulbagh and Gouda.

Two days ago this unit was leading the train that brought me here and here it is again today leading the CPT - EL train.

Night time at Matjiesfontein as a westbound grain train has just gone through, the white lights on top are to indicate the position of the switch which in this case was aligned straight.

Riding through the Hex River Valley just past the small town of De Doorns passengers are treated to wonderful scenery all around.

The Cape Town to Johannesburg Economy train is a few minutes away from a quick stop at Matjiesfontein as it is coming out of a shallow cut.

We are about 5 min away from our stop at Bellville on board the JHB - CPT tourist train through Stikland station where we meet the CPT - PTA Rovos train.

So close to being a complete purple train! The Premier Classe from Johannesburg is passing here through Brackenfell station with about 40 min left of the journey to Cape Town.

These 2 class 33 diesels are still going strong after 40 years of service. They are seen here a few km outside the town of Riversdal leading the Voorbaai - Worcester freight.

A single class 33 diesel works hard uphill with this short load of petrol tankers. The mountain peak in the back is the famous Sleeping Beauty, if you look carefully you might see her face on the ... (more)

Two class 35 diesels lead a short grain train from Caledon past the Steenbras dam on top of Sir Lowrys Pass towards Bellville.

The last bit of sun light is shining on the clouds above as this Metro Rail train slows for a stop at Muldersvlei station. The green signal in front is for the CPT to DBN economy train.
