Passenger train Colombo - Matara

MLW class M4s at Galle loco shed. 750, named Isurumuni, is turned on the turntable while 748, Walawe, rests in the shed. Both locos were built in Montreal in 1975.

EMD Class M2d No 628 arrives at Galle with the 1015 Matara to Colombo Fort. Most of the M2 class were built several years earlier in Canada, while 628 and 629 were built in the USA in 1966.

In 2013 there can`t be many places in the world with so many semaphore signals visible in one view. The locos visible are Brush M7 No 800 (left) and Hitachi M5 No 778.

Morning rush hour commuters cross the tracks at Colombo Fort immediately after the departure of an S9 DMU.

The new order on the Badulla line are these brand new 10 car S12 DMUs from China. Here, No 924 leaves Bandarwela with the 0810 Colombo Fort to Badulla.

Apart from the statue of Buddha (above the smaller clock) this could almost be a UK scene from any time since the Victorian era. The signalman at Kandy is busy at his job.

Cab view of Henschel diesel hydraulic No 667. This loco was built in 1969 as a W1 class, but reclassified as a W3 when later fitted with a Caterpillar engine.

Plenty of semaphore signals here. Hitachi M5 No 778 leaves Kandy with the 1530 to Colombo Fort.

Colombo Fort station in the morning rush hour is a busy and atmospheric place. Here 2 DMUs disgorge their passengers onto the platforms.

Mixed trains are still a feature of Sri Lanka Railways. Here 667 arrives at Peradeniya Junction, near kandy, with the 1020 kandy to Nawalapitya, mixed. Passengers ride in ancient looking carriages... (more)

Ancient S7 DMU trailers are propelled by a more recent S6 Hitachi motor car (at far end). Seen at Colombo Maradana on a local service.

M6 Henschel No 785 leaves Colombo Maradana for Colombo Fort.

Vintage GM loco 594 was built in 1958 but still looks good as it passes Colombo Maradana in 2005.
