A little glint and a lot of exhaust! The four EMDs on this manifest train are accounting for 85% of the exhaust as they and 3 GEs approach Caliente for an impending meet with UP 5527 North.

I wasn't able to make it to Tehachapi while it was green this last spring, but as the trees on the hillside above UP 5527 North prove, there was still a little to be found in late June.

I'm not sure lighting can get much better than this. In the warm glow of the evening sun, BNSF 7724 North splits the signals at Caliente.

The sligtly greater than 2% average grade in the Allard area allows trains to gain a lot of elevation in a short distance. Demonstrating this is BNSF 4488 South who's headend power can be seen on ... (more)

Apparently battling the 2% grade at the Tunnel 2 horseshoe is no sweat for this BNSF manifest. BNSF 4488 and mates barely make a smudge of exhaust in the warm evening light.

BNSF 7877 winds it's way downhill towards Tunnel 2. This is my favorite spot on Tehachapi, and I've always wanted to shoot this angle.
