Remarks: Welcome to the jungle. Remote Control KCS Switcher 4338 sits on the East leg of the KCS Airline Highway wye, waiting for pickup on its way to Baton Rouge - supposedly for inspection or repair. The greenery and overgrowth starts early in South Louisiana (does it ever stop?), with tropical type temps throughout most of the year.

Remarks: "I've been everywhere, man..I've been everywhere.." 2 pages worth of pics of this engine on Railpictures.net. It's fascinating to see all the places these engines visit. Among 21's travels: Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Massachusetts, Alabama, West Virginia, Quebec, Virginia, Pennsylvania, California, Michigan, Texas, Mississippi, and now here in Louisiana. At this point, #21 is about to duck under the Earhart overpass fresh out of NOUPT, leading the Sunset Limited back to California and more photographic opportunities.

Remarks: A Norfolk Southern mixed freight tiptoes quitely through the ritzy neighborhoods of Old Metairie, careful not to blow its horn for fear of disturbing the residents.

Remarks: On the "Back Belt", and awaiting their turn to cross I-10, a few horses sit alongside City Park. Several art deco bridges are in place along this line, some a little worse for wear.

Remarks: Rumbling quietly (a "No Horn" zone) through Old Metairie, a high hood NS unit approaches Metairie Road headed for the bridges over the 17th Street Canal and I-10 - past the cemetaries. Thanks to my friend James Robichaux for the following info and train ID: ".. UP's QLINSL-23 coming through Old Metairie on its way to an interchange with the Norfolk Southern in New Orleans with the rarity of a high-nosed Geep in the lead in 2009".

Remarks: A transfer run from the New Orleans Public Belt to U.P's Avondale Yard creeps by a CN Hi-Rail truck as it approaches Central Avenue crossing on it's way up the Huey P. Long Bridge. This shot offers a good look at the NOPB's 100yr Anniversary paint livery.

Remarks: Pete Messina's shop at the KCS railyard off of Airline Highway, houses lots of interesting equipment from time to time. Here you see his NYC Bonnie Brook with a "New England States" tail sign, round end observation car and an NYC Baggage he uses for parts storage. Pete has worked on cars for many private individuals and rail companies alike, including the KCS and locally, the New Orleans Public Belt.

Remarks: A KCS mixed freight sits slumbering at Central Avenue with HLCX and Ferromex units thrown in for color's sake. Seconds later, "A Service Cab" rolls up with the crew, and the friendly engineer is concerned that he may have gotten in my shot. Great way to start the day.

Remarks: Lights are off and nobody's home. This very mixed freight sits crewless with motors running like a ghost ship at sea. A new "swoosh" #810 is the second unit. The second car, a flat, holds two wind turbine generators. The next flat (DODX), holds a tracked military vehicle which looks like part of an old bridgelayer or tank recovery unit.

Remarks: Shot from a signalman's high rail vehicle pacing on the adjacent track, the Louisiana Steam Train Association's reborn steam locomotive (Algiers 1921) is making her first trip over the mighty Huey Long Bridge in over 50 years. She has just crested the apex over the Mississippi River and has two miles of descent before reaching the UP's Avondale Yard and a meeting with her old home rails of the former SP. This is the start of her month long tour of the state to celebrate the Lousiana Purchase Bicentennial.
