Remarks: Dysfunctional Signals at the site of the disaster On January 6, 2005 NS train 192 collided head on with NS local P22 in downtown Graniteville, SC. The NS local had left the switch to the Avondale Mill's siding, which can be seen diverging to the right in the photo, open in the path of NS 192 which then struck the local derailing both of 192's locomtives and 16 cars including one filled with Chlorine which ruptured and spilled over 90 tons of gas into the air. As a result 9 people including the engineer of NS 192. In addition the Chlorine gas destroyed much of the machinery at the mill resulting in the closure of the towns main employer. 4 years later train 155 rumbles past the seemingly misleading signal in downtown Graniteville. The signal in reality is a spring switch indicator and does not show block occupancy. Regardless it is a strange sight seeing a train highballing from behind a clear, and after the disaster one would thing a proper signal system would have been installed.

Remarks: Soo 6600 at Gilchrist after 4408 had been pulled off of her. In a few day it will be off on the long slow trip to Shoreham to be evaluated and soon enough will be determined to be beyond repair. Then it will be off to EMD as trade material for a brand new SD40-2. For a picture of 6600 a couple years earlier at this same location looking much more as EMD intended see photo #307936.

Remarks: Firefighters, railroad workers, police, and a couple photographers at the site of a head on collision between Soo trains 909-910 about 1 mile east of Gilchrist. 910 was supposed to take siding at Gilchrist for the meet but inadvertently went past and continued toward the east meeting westbound 909 in a curve with this as the result. Crews jumped before impact no doubt saving their lives. The fuel tank on 4408 ruptured and burst into flames as the electrical cabinet on 6600 provided the spark to start the fire. The location was about a mile from the nearest road and the resulting fire quickly spread into the woods. Quick action from a nearby Michigan DNR firefighting crew who bulldozed a road in and quickly controlled the fire prevented this from becoming a even more serious situation. The train crews involved had quickly backed the remaining units and cars, remarkably none of which even derailed, away from the fire so they did not become involved.

Remarks: Railroading really is a 24-7 business. Just as some were settling down to enjoy the Christmas holiday the phone rang, crashing any dreams they had of spending time with the family. With any luck some of the guys from Hulcher will be home by tomorrow.

Remarks: During the middle of the night in the 1981, a corn field meet occurred between two Chessie System trains near Morgantown, West Virginia. The carnage at the scene was unbelievable. There were mangled hoppers all over the place and a GP7 was laying on it side almost as if it were tossed around like a rag doll. Here is B&O 6965, or what's left of it. You can see the control stand about where the cab used to be and also note its own dynamic brake blister in the air above it. A Robert Tokarcik photo.
