Remarks: New Link Light Rail trains emerge from darkness into the light on a regular basis now. Within a couple of months of the new lines opening, the new smooth, silent trains are still a wonder to those who see them in the Downtown Transit Tunnel. Sound Transit and Metro are still working out operational and signal issues that are plaguing any new system. The "bus tunnel", originally built in the 80's and opened in 1990, housed dual-mode diesel/electric buses until a retrofit in 2005 that readied the tunnel for new light rail service. The remodel took two years. During the time, Sound Transit and Metro installed new rails, centenary, electrical substations, and emergency ventilation systems, and lowered the roadway 2" so trains could be boarded levelly. In the foreground track, three lime road turtles spot a 2-car train. Longer 3-4 car trains are to stop a the next set just down the track. Here, at the south end of the Tunnel, accents of Asian culture dot the concrete and stone, open-air station.

Remarks: Weyerhaeuser Woods Train with the WTCX #312 and #309 are about to enter the Weyerhaeuser Ostrander Tunnel that is approx. 875' with today's wood products for the Weyerhaeuser Mill in Longview Washington. It is almost another 10 miles and the train will pull into the Longview Mill in another 1.5 hours. Ostrander creek seen left, winds its' way through the hills flowing down to the Colwitz River about 4 miles from this location. The creek rejoins the railroad on the west side of the tunnel entrance.

Remarks: The light at the end of the tunnel is, in fact, an approaching train: In less than a second, a westbound will emerge from the darkness of Cascade Tunnel into the gloom of a twilit evening. The heat contained in the exhausted gases which pour out of the tunnel with and after each train is evident from the amount of snow that has been melted off the tracks outside the portal.

Remarks: For the past hour, NS 135 has been on its hands and knees battling mother nature, climbing the rugged Blue Ridge mountains on a cold and rainy fall day. In a scene perfectly suited for Halloween, the train emerges from a blanket of clouds, soon to plunge back into darkness as it enters the Ridgecrest Tunnel. Thankfully as the name implies, the tunnel marks the summit of the grade, and soon the train will be running downhill toward a stop in Asheville.
