Surely that lone GE was not the only power on that train! Is it a DPU, or is it the lead unit, with DPUs cut into the middle (and/or rear)?

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the CP coal train operations. CP coal trains operate with three units (2 on the head end and one remote on the rear) from the mines to Chase, BC. At Chase, one unit from the head end is dropped and the train proceeds to Roberts Bank with two units. This has been standard since the joint operating agreement with the CN began approx. 3 years ago. The CN has lower grades thus CP is able to take advantage of this feature by using only two AC4400's. On return trips, the reverse holds true. With respect to the joint operating agreement, CN lines are used for westbounds from Basque/Nepa, BC to Mission, BC and CP lines are used for eastbounds. On occassion, high/wide loads will require exceptions to this operation. Essentially, this allows for double track opearations.
