I always kind of thought these locomotives were fairly homely - as covered wagons go. But in the AT&SF Warbonnet scheme - they look good to me now. Thanks Roger for posting.

Nice rare shot. I agree with the above comment. They were kind of ugly, but looked good in the Santa Fe paint scheme.

Roger, thank you for sharing that! You say these units were retired after only 16 years, but for a rare FM cab passenger unit, working1947-1963 = 16 years, that's not too bad a career for them? The odds and circumstances were stacked against them lasting long, or long at all compared to EMD or Alco units, period.

Everyone has favorite schemes but nothing is as unmistakable as the ATSF passenger livery. Those units look great even if they're not so great mechanically.

Santa Fe may have had to hold onto these until the lease or trust had expired (just a thought). I remember reading how N&W renumbered various units in order to sell or scrap them but legally couldn't until the lease had expired. Again, just a thought. Other comments?
