Nice. Climbing up those vertical ladders with a "grip" must have been fun back in the days when F units, FA units, "Sharks" and the like were typical power on freight trains!

Interesting how they don't have the square vents on top that the FTs were famous for. Were there any practical reason for their roofs being rounded off?

The "square vents" you are asking about are most likely the dynamic brakes that some railroads ordered on their FTs. The demonstrators did not have dynamic brakes. Railroads that owned FTs with dynamic brakes were ATSF, B&M, B&O, CB&Q, DL&W, D&RGW, ERIE, GN, MILW, M&StL, NYC, NP, NYO&W, RDG, SSW and WP.
