Functional. Utilitarian. Unique. Not a classic beauty, but it has its merits.

For those who may be unaware, this locomotive was a retired Kraus Maffei ML 4000 diesel hydraulic locomotive that was repurposed after retirement to film the right of way for use in SP's locomotive simulator program. The unit was later donated to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento where it was stored for many years. It is now in possession of the Pacific Locomotive Association's Niles Canyon Railway. The locomotive has been carefully restored to its original appearance and one of its two engines and transmissions (2000 HP) is being restored to service. You can easily find photographs and the amazing story with a simple internet search for "SP 9101," its original number.
