Can't help to think about Milwaukee Road's Cascade crossing of Snoqualmie Pass at 1.7% and a tunnel only 2.25 miles long. Engineering that was apparently superior to Stevens and Stampede Pass, but a location that was deemed incompatible with BN's system. Should be thankful that a trail system has kept this grade intact.
