I remember reading somewhere that the Yellow on silver Yellow bonnet paint scheme wasn't intentional. Rather, the engines (which were for the most part exclusively passenger engines) were painted in their traditional red/yellow/silver "warbonnet" scheme. However something was wrong with the paint, prompting the red to keep peeling off, leaving the yellow under coat showing. Rather than spend money to correct this, the railroad simply kept the scheme for a while, until such time as a better paint was developed or purchased.
