At the slow speed they run it seems incomprehensible to me that they would buy 4400 HP units with only four motors. Much have been such a deal.

Nice looking all around. Tom Farence, if only the Milwaukee would have had a little of what they hand out today.?

I'm not sure what the modern crews lack that the old timers had in skill, but I've watched some videos of the Tacoma Rail hill job stalling out with the old SD45 and SD40 they had and less than 20 cars in tow. But I rode the Weyerhauser Chehalis Western logger in 1992 shortly before they closed and they were able to get 42 empty 42ft log bunks and caboose up that hill with 2 GP38's and lots of sand with little trouble on a rainy day no less. The Milwaukee before them made this hill often with 50+ cars and mid train helper. So I guess Tacoma Rail needs these big units to get the goods up the hill and eliminate the stall trouble they were having.
