Boy.....our old Milwaukee Road Engineers I used to fire for on the passenger trains in the 1960's would have loved the Mars oscillating headlights high up on the roof like the ones on the CP wagons. The first thing I had to do when boarding in Milwaukee on the FP7's or E9's was to go down in the nose and adjust the Mars light to it's highest position......I remember arguing with Leo Meyers and telling him that the Mars light was supposed to be a warning device for motorists at crossings not low flying aircraft.....but those old timers wanted to be able to see an on-coming train on the double track mainlines between Chicago and the Twin Cities from ten miles away.....and with an overcast you could see that light beam along ways away. I guess the Canadian Locomotive Engineers had the same idea.....I gotta say it was great on single track manual block when you had a meet coming at say Greenleaf,WI. on the Copper Country Ltd's trains 9&10..........

Actually these were added to cast a light on the mountains at night to entertain passengers especially those riding in the domes.
