I was never thrilled with that "high horsepower 4 axle" phase that the Santa Fe and SP went through in the 1980s to early 1990s. I was happy to see the double stack "revolution" put the kibosh on it, because I always like the big 6 axles better. Turned out to be a practical consideration generally, once the "North American Safety Cab" became the norm, since the 4 axle versions started to push weight limits with the new cabs that forced the railroads to choose between reduced fuel capacity and returning to 6 axle power.
