What a unique shot! I sure hope this line stays in service. It is in such a cool location and makes for some great shots like this one.

That looks like a tail lamp from the UK, attached to the buckeye coupling? See http://www.railpictures.net/photo/206897/ for comparison

I suspect that it is a Fred (Flashing rear End Device). This train probably does numerous reverses, with someone on a radio at the far end communicating with the engineer in the Loco pictured here.
