Is this a rebuilt end modernized engine of the same series as the other diesel on the same track behind?

Jean-Marc, this was a one-off rebuilt from a class D343 while the one behind is a class D445.

The new group originated from the prototype made up of the D.343.2016 locomotive, which was transformed in 2005 [1], in an attempt to modernize the diesel engine fleet in the Trenitalia Cargo sector. The machine has undergone a profound change during which the driving cabins, rebuilt to UIC standards, have also been modified. The change has profoundly changed both the mechanics and the electric part of the locomotive, with the replacement of the 900 kW generating motor unit with one consisting of a Caterpillar type Caterpillar 3512B diesel engine from 1 430 kW to 1 800 g / m and a three-phase Traktionsysteme alternator, of Austrian construction, from 1 275 kW (instead of direct current generator). The traction motors have been improved in isolation and their drive has been modified by means of three-phase / continuous conversion circuits. All the auxiliary equipment, the cooling system and the control box of the driver's cabs, similar to the unified one with 4-code repeater equipment, have been renewed. The sample, initially destined to remain unique, after a few years, between 2008 and 2009, was taken as a model for the reconstruction of D.343.2011, also subject to radical restructuring at the Fervet company in Castelfranco Veneto during the course of which the supporting frame has been extended by 800 mm, the case and the mechanical parts have been strengthened and restored and the driving cabs have been completely replaced. In 2009, the new Caterpillar 3512B diesel engine was installed at the Grandi Riparazioni workshop in Rimini, proceeding with the rest of the transformations. The rolling stock was re-registered as 449.001, giving rise to the new group 449 and once it was finished it was made available for service in the second half of 2010. A second rolling stock, 449.002, from the former 343.2031, was still in course of completion when in March 2011 Trenitalia decided to end the experiment. Both the two D.449 and the D.343.2016 have been set aside [2]. The D449 and the D343 2016 should have been incorporated by RFI and carry out services for the towing of diagnostic vehicles on secondary lines.
