Are those crossties [in the lower left corner] laid on a diagonal ?

I realize it may appear that the ties in the lower left corner are inserted under the rail on the diagonal, but this is actually due to the angle of view of an ultra-wide lens; in this case, a Nikon 18mm. We'd call this "visual" distortion, mostly because the ultra-wide lens "sees" things differently from the human eye and brain. Great question.
