While rail fanning one time I saw a car's wheels sliding on the rail. The flat spot that you speak of was so flat they had to sidetrack the car later down the line after I had alerted the tower operator. How it ever made it through two diamonds without derailing is beyond me. Later in the day I traced the car and found they had red tagged it to not be moved. Part of the flange was missing and had they not sidetracked it - it would have probably derailed causing a massive wreck. I'm glad I could help.
