There is quite a bit of info on the internet about this line. The official name is Ramal C-14 and there is some good history in Wikipedia, including a brief bio of Maury, the American engineer who located the line. And tracing the line on a satellite view provides some incredible armchair railroad riding. The line was closed for awhile, but apparently is again being used for some freight as well as a tourist train. I have seen some neat you-tube video.

Dear John, actually the touristic *Tren a las Nubes" is not running from Salta. Only a short trip from San Antonio de los Cobres to La Polvorilla bridge, three times a week...http://www.trenalasnubes.com.ar/noroeste_argentino/turismo_salta/es_tren_a_las_nubes_recorrido.aspx Aabout freight trains there are many projects but nothing serious by now.
