Is this where they shot the closing scene to the movie -- IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT?

Not all that far off, Tom. The scene was filmed in Sparta, IL (fictionally Sparta, MS in the movie). Passenger service had not existed in Sparta since the late 50's - and never with E units in charge - so the movie train must have been quite a spectacle for any local rail fan. But I'm surprised photos of the train getting to Sparta from St. Louis and back are rare - if indeed any exist at all.

That movie was immediately brought to my mind as well, the shot is even taken the year the movie was made. However, I don't think this was where they filmed the train station shots, because the station in the movie had multiple tracks in front of it, not a single track as seen here.

Tom, I believe that was in Sparta, Illinois though in the movie it was depicted as Sparta, Mississippi.

The closing scene of "In the Heat of the Night" came to my mind as well, and yes, it was in fact; Sparta, and not Granite City. Nice catch!
