What's with the large gap between the front trucks and the fuel tanks? Long frames or short tanks?

Milwaukee SD40-2s came with smaller tanks, no doubt due to track conditions around much of the railroad.

I think some of their spindly bridges had something to do with them using the smaller fuel tanks to limit the maximum load of these six axle units too.

I'm not sure about mainline bridges, but some branch lines such as the branch from Winona, MN to Eau Claire had bridges that could not even handle GP9s or two units together. That line used SDL39s in later days, Alco RSC-2s earlier.
