This operation only lasted about 4 years out of 359's 9 years of running. The River Cities was added for the New Orleans Worlds Fair in 1984, it was an extension of a Missouri mule. A Southern Railway crew brought the consist to Centralia and added a dome, coach and sleeper to 59. The F40PH would then get serviced in the Centralia roundhouse. 359/358 soon dwindled to one coach, frequently an ex NP dome. When crew districts were adjusted, Amtrak began running the short one car train down to Carbondale and doing the adding and subtracting there. My father was the station agent in Centralia. The highlight of a summer night was riding 359 through the 3 switches from the NS over to the IC at 10:55PM, then hopping off after my 3 block ride (i was only 10 at the time).
